6.7.10 "Project for Nike"

Last week I was asked to aid in the fabrication and assembly of the new Nike Chalkbot robot that will be seen this year at the Tour de France. It was great to be able work alongside a hydraulics and electrical engineer as I was able to steal some free education regarding the robot's many subsystems. While on site I was asked to wire up a 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, a painter heater, oil radiator and I assisted in assembling the paint sprayer head. You can read more about last year's Chalkbot HERE.

11.27.09 "Going Pro"

A few days ago I had the privilege of meeting with the former 4 time super bowl champion Franco Harris! After learning that we would be doing some CAD modeling for his new company it's needless to say that I was super excited. A half hour of joking about how The Cadbox was the official product development company of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and how we could be paid in season tickets, I finally got back to the days work. The project that had to be completed that day was a simple set of concepts of a children's pencil for an entrepreneurial mom. My ego was quickly brought back down to earth, it is good to have projects that keep things in perspective!

11.23.09 "Always Learning"

When I remember my college days I think about all the time I spent outside of the classroom doing "product designerly things". I would skip an english class to learn the features of our CNC lathe, render an image while waiting for my food at the sandwich shop, and stay at the school 'til 11pm watching machining videos on Youtube. I just realized the other day how this has definitely not stopped.

While sitting with my wife and her parents I caught myself (after what I am guessing was a solid 10 minutes) of staring at their TV remote. I was visually measuring the tolerances between the rubber keys, the abs enclosure, the IR LED. I kept popping the battery cover on and off studying the properties of the "living hinge" etc. I wonder how many times I subconsciously study something, fiddle with something, and listen to something all in hopes to learn as much as I can about product design? I hope I never stop!
